Arbitrage - Definition and applications

"True" arbitrage is only taking place when there is no risk involved in the transaction.

Arbitrage is the practice of taking advantage of a price differential between two or more markets: a combination of matching deals are struck that capitalize upon the imbalance, the profit being the difference between the market prices. There are many other instances where arbitrage can occur outside of stock markets or other financial markets. Many people use arbitrage on a daily basis and may not know it. For instance I have found products that sell for more on Amazon.com than they do on Ebay.com. So I put up a listing on Amazon.com and only when I make a sale do I place an order on Ebay.com. There is no risk involved because I have already been paid and the purchaser pays my shipping costs, true arbitrage. This is just one example of arbitrage. Another example is online today you can purchase advertising for very cheap in some places and then charge more on your own website. So you pay $.05 per visitor to your site and earn $.10 per visitor. There once again is no risk because you are only paying when you get a visitor and you know how much you will make per visitor. We explore situations where there is an opportunity to make money with little or no risk involved. I know many of you reading this will say "YEAH right! Make money with no risk. Well then everyone would be doing it." Well quite frankly everyone is not that smart and some people will not take advantage of even a perfect set of circumstanced due to fear. You can or cannot take advantage of markets that allow for arbitrage, that is your prerogative, but someone will.
